Kids & Youth Drama Classes with Jodie Grant

Welcome to DramaLAB for Kids and Youth!

My name is Jodie and I am absolutely passionate about working with our children and youth to create character, story and performance in the dramatic arts.

I am a qualified New Zealand primary school teacher with 25 years experience and have been actively involved with creating school productions every year.

I have additional Diplomas in teaching Drama and Music and Children’s Literature.

The DramaLAB process begins with building dramatic skills, trust in your ensemble,(crew), and confidence through drama games and exercises. DramaLAB classes develop children’s personal growth, confidence and social skills in a safe, playful environment.

The DramaLAB performance process supports each actor to create their own character with layers of detail unique to that character.

Under guidance, the group brainstorm and discuss ideas to compose a storyline that weaves all their characters into their chosen theme and genre.

Next I write a unique script, incorporating the group’s individual characters and storyline priorities. The show is rehearsed each week, building up the stage movements, acting and performance skills. The actors design and create their own costumes and props.

Each year, DramaLAB presents a performance for the community that showcases the children’s dramatic talents through their plays. Shows include performance skills in acting, dance, individual and choral singing, theatrical gymnastics and playing instruments. All  are encouraged and woven into the performance if the actors are keen and it works within the storyline.

If DramaLAB sounds like the creative opportunity  for your child/teenager, contact me to arrange a visit to a class that would suit.

Classes are Mondays and Tuesdays from 3.30 – 4.30 and 4.30 – 5.30.

See you in the performance space!

Adult Physical Theatre Classes, Courses & Workshops with Martine Baanvinger

Kiaora koutou,

I have been teaching drama and physical theatre classes for 12 years in the Tasman Region. I also teach physical theatre workshops and courses throughout New Zealand for art festivals, schools & universities and mental health organizations.

After studying theatre at the Theatre Academy in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, I have participated in a variety of physical theatre intensives. Most of these with Lynne Bradley (Australia) and Alys Hill (New Zealand) from Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre Company. Zen Zen Zo has been a strong influence in my teaching and through ‘Zen’ I have gained knowledge in Viewpoints Training, Suzuki Actor Training and Butoh. My gratitude goes out to my powerful teachers and to their teachers which shoulder they stand on.  Viewpoints, Suzuki Actor Training , Butoh and a range of devising theatre techniques are the styles which my teaching is based on.

On a regular basis I teach weekly in the DramaLAB Training Room. The Monday Training Room produces an unique and original theatre show each year.

I also offer several 7-week physical theatre courses each year in the Nelson/Tasman Region.
